Project Description

Purdue University Northwest Campus had previously invested in efficient lighting, air systems, and a digital control system, but was still looking to save energy and improve operations at the campus. By taking a holistic approach, Performance Services identified how to save approximately 32% or $258,000 annually in energy costs with opportunities in the generation and delivery of heating and cooling utilities to the campus at four buildings. Capital equipment upgrades were included in the project, including expansion of the digital controls system, elimination of pneumatic controls, occupancy sensors and the replacement of several aging pumps and fan motors – all work that may not have been otherwise funded if a qualified energy savings project had not been pursued.

Project Highlights

  • New electric steam boiler in Schwartz Hall
  • Replaced main chiller
  • Added two heat recovery chillers in the Library and Technology building
  • Replaced control devices on existing air handlers
  • Converted constant volume to variable volume air handlers
  • Installed occupancy sensors in classrooms and other campus spaces
  • Control System Optimized
  • Installed energy-efficient motors on pumps and air-conditioning systems

“Purdue Northwest expects to reduce their carbon footprint by 2,000 metric tons each year as a result of this project.”
