Project Description

Lake Park High School District 108 faced the daunting challenge of improving its energy efficiency and the learning environment for its students. Determined to take control of its energy destiny, the District embarked on a journey, partnering with Performance Services to create a sustainable future for its two campuses.

Phase I: Laying the Foundation

In August 2016, the District took the first step toward energy efficiency by implementing comprehensive upgrades. These upgrades included new energy-efficient vertical classroom units, control system enhancements, lighting improvements, and a cooling tower replacement. This marked the beginning of their commitment to reducing energy consumption while maintaining optimal learning conditions.

Phase II: Renewable Energy

Building on their initial success, the District launched Phase II, focusing on renewable energy sources. They installed two roof-mounted solar PV systems at Lake Park West and Lake Park East High Schools, creating a combined 1.86 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) system. This innovative solution significantly reduced electricity use by over 2.2 million kWh and positioned the District as a leader in sustainable energy practices. Additionally, the District generated revenue by selling excess solar renewable energy credits (SRECs), projected to exceed $5 million over 25 years, further enhancing their financial stability.

2020 and Beyond: Continuous Improvement

The District has continued to work with Performance Services to initiate six additional phases of improvements. These projects aimed at further enhancing the learning environment and achieving greater efficiencies include:

  • New Tridium open protocol server and graphical user interface
  • Temperature/Humidity/Co2 control for learning spaces
  • New air handling units with Merv 8 filters
  • Hot water/chilled water coils
  • Emergency generators
  • High-efficiency chillers
  • High-efficiency boilers
  • Cooling tower replacement
  • Installed four DX rooftop units and associated controls
  • Installed new relief fans for precise building pressure control
  • LED lighting
  • Science lab renovations; exhaust fans/fume hoods
  • Vertical classroom unit ventilators
  • Building automation controller upgrades

Throughout their journey, the District made a smart decision to implement an open-protocol building control system. This allowed them to maintain control, lower costs, and achieve flexibility while utilizing their existing proprietary controllers. This strategic choice ensured seamless integration, operational efficiency, and improved thermal comfort in the classroom.

In conclusion, Lake Park High School District 108’s journey to renewed infrastructure and energy efficiency exemplifies its commitment to sustainability, financial prudence, and creating an optimal learning environment. Their story inspires other districts aiming to take control of their energy future while making smart, sustainable choices. The District’s dedication to continuous improvement and innovation ensures that it remains at the forefront of energy efficiency and educational excellence.
